Beyond the Blessing
If I could have a super power, I think I’d go with the power to choose the perfect gift for the people I love. I’ve known plenty of people with that particular super power over the years, and I’ve always marveled at just how fitting their gifts have been for each recipient.
The gifts aren’t necessarily extravagant or expensive, but they’re always just the right thing. I walk away wondering, “Now, why didn’t I think of that?”
Regardless of whether the gift is simple or fancy, it says a whole lot about the giver. The giver studies his or her person, remembers passing comments, and makes lots of mental notes. He or she listens, gages emotions, and picks up on subtle cues. He or she is sensitive, incredibly thoughtful, and selfless. Top of mind is always, “What can I give (or do or say) that will bring hope, joy or comfort to the one I love?”
In Numbers 6:22-26, God instructs Moses to have Aaron and the priests give a special gift to the Israelites – His blessing found in these words:
“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace.”
Now that’s a God Who knows His people! There’s a reason why the Bible says “every good and perfect gift is from above” (James 1:17)! He knows His people need assurance and security, His favor and grace, His attention and His peace. And His arms are full and open to them, offering hope, joy, and comfort – things His people are in desperate need of as they move toward the Promised Land of milk and honey.
Yes, this blessing spells out a lot of what God is willing to do for His people, but more than that, it spells out the character and strength of God the Giver. This God is infinitely good, making available to His beloved the depths of His boundless resources. His omnipotent arms are able to hold us closely in His secure embrace. His heart of goodwill lies wide open to those of His household, and He overlooks the offenses of those who are covered by the righteous blood of His Son. This God knows our thoughts before we think them and our words before we speak them – so close and attentive is He to us. He Who “stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed” (Psalm 107:29) – this God is able to melt all fears and all anxieties with a breath.
Every child of God receives our good Father’s good gifts with open hands. But with raised arms, we praise, thank, and worship Him, for those gifts open our eyes to Who He truly is – our all-wise King Whose ways are right, just, and kind.
His gifts are sweet, but I just want more of Him.
“The Lord bless you…”
