King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon depended on a group of “wise men” – astrologers, enchanters, sorcerers, and magicians – for counsel. When he had a disturbing dream, he went to this circle of men and demanded that they not only interpret the dream, but tell him what the dream was. Under threat of death if they were unable to do so, the panicked group told the king that only “the gods” could do such a thing, stating “they do not live among us.” The king was infuriated and ordered that the wise men of Babylon be executed.

Among the targeted were four exiles from Judah – Daniel and his friends Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Daniel went to the king and asked for more time. Then he went home and explained to his three friends what was happening. He urged them to join him in prayer to the God of heaven and to plead for His mercy. In the night, Daniel received God’s revelation of King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream. The “gods” of the king’s wise men were proven to be false – in fact, they were proven to be nonexistent. But the God of Daniel was (and is!) living, active, listening to the prayers of His people, and responding.

When you’re faced with a hard situation, do you turn to the God Who hears you? Do you circle up prayer warriors to join you in storming heaven’s gates with your needs and requests? Do you approach His throne of grace with confidence? Our God is alive! He lives among us! He is our Living Hope! Take your concerns to the God of heaven, and let Him give you the answers you seek. (You can read this account in Daniel 2.)

*****

Father God, nothing is impossible for You! No trouble we may face is too difficult for the all-powerful Creator of the heavens and the earth! You are able! We can trust You to be near us and to strengthen us – no matter how big or small our challenges. As our Father, You delight to care for and shelter us. In You, we’re safe. Wrapped in Your strong arms, we’re secure. Resting in the shadow of Your wings, we find perfect peace. And where two or three gather in Your name, You promise to be in our midst. (Matthew 18:20) We need never fear confronting our giants alone. The Lord of Heaven’s Armies stands watch over us and fights our battles. We praise You in the beautiful Name of Jesus, amen.
