One of the perks of being chosen to be trained for service in King Nebuchadnezzar’s court was to be provided with rich foods and delicacies from the king’s table. Daniel knew these foods had previously been sacrificed to idols and eating them would signify loyalty to the king’s gods. He was unwilling to partake of the food for that reason so he wisely and diplomatically approached the chief official with a compromise. Daniel suggested a ten-day trial of eating only vegetables and drinking only water. At the end of the trial, the official could compare the appearance of Daniel and his friends with the other young men in training and decide if they could continue their own diet. The official was understandably reluctant. Harm to any of those under his supervision would result in his execution. But Daniel and his friends had so impacted the guard who had charge over them with their integrity and excellence, he agreed to Daniel’s plan. At the end of the trial, each of the four young men was healthier and better nourished than the others who had taken their meals from the king’s table. So the guard allowed Daniel and his friends to continue their diet of vegetables and water. Daniel was loyal to God, fully aware that it might cost him his life. God stirred the guard’s heart to show favor toward Daniel and his friends because of their good character and model behavior. Long before this challenge, these young men had resolved to stay loyal to God. When the time came for testing, their determination to stay true to Him didn’t waiver. It may feel impossible to thrive in today’s culture when we determine to live faithfully for God, but Daniel’s story reminds us that God is worthy of our allegiance. Like Daniel and his friends, we must commit to God’s ways long before we face challenges to our faith. We must be convinced that God is the One True God and His way is the only way. We must trust in His protection when we boldly stand up for Him. When temptations or challenges arise, we’ll be better prepared to resist and face them head on. Our faithfulness to God may seem peculiar to the world, but it also has the power to make a godly impact on those looking for hope. Remember that the God over us is the God over all. We can function in – and even lead – our culture if we first pledge our loyalty to Him. He can use us to be a blessing to the world if His ways are of first importance in our hearts.

Father, You encourage Your people – You “pour courage” into our hearts. Your just and good character compels us to live faithfully for You no matter the cost. Forgive us when we shy away from boldly proclaiming the good news of Your mercy and grace because we fear man. Any suffering or exclusion we may endure because of our faith is of no consequence when compared with the riches of Your glory that await us in heaven. Help us to live with our true home in mind. Help us to live courageously and unashamedly as Your willing ambassadors. Help us to desire above all else to please You. Thank You for Your favor and protection as we strive by the power of Your Holy Spirit to live uncompromised lives in a culture addicted to relativism. In Jesus’ beautiful Name, amen.
