A Prayer for Silent Saturday…

Father, I can only imagine a holy relief in seeing the end of the suffering of Your Son and knowing His redemptive sacrifice was now complete. The sins of all time and all mankind were paid for. But for eleven disciples and a handful of devoted followers – in the in-between of death and resurrection – there was only stunned grief, confusion, and fear. The religious leaders were smug in their assumed victory. The Roman world returned to business as usual. But those who loved Jesus sat in the crushing silence of their Savior’s absence.

For those of us on this side of the resurrection, today is a mixed bag – the grief of our Lord crucified and the anticipation of our Savior resurrected! Sin and death conquered! Freedom! Welcome to new life!

But Lord, let me not rush past this Silent Saturday.

Let me pause and be solemn. I know now what the disciples would soon learn. Good Friday accomplished our ransom by the blood of Jesus – our righteous covering so that we could be reconciled to our holy God. The disciples surely couldn’t sleep in the early hours of Silent Saturday, haunted by the true nightmare of the crucifixion. Help me – today and always – to keep in mind what Love did for me on that cross.

With humility, gratitude, and love,

Your Child
