The Israelites left Egypt behind in the Exodus, but they carried the practice of idol worship with them into the wilderness. The Egyptians worshiped multiple “gods,” each “god” supposedly dispensing different blessings – the more “gods,” the more blessings. Accustomed to the Egyptian way of worship, it wasn’t problematic in the eyes of the Israelites to add the one true God to their list of idols. When the first of the Ten Commandments required that Israel have no other gods besides the Lord God Almighty, He had their attention. When He abolished idol worship with the second commandment, they leaned in even more closely. Unless Israel learned and understood that the God Who had rescued them from 400 years of Egyptian slavery was the one true God, they could never be the unique, singled-out nation God was calling them to be. He was commanding them to look to Him alone as the Provider for every need and the sole Protector in every situation. Most importantly, He was showing them that His character and deeds were worthy of their exclusive allegiance and reverent worship. God created us to be worshipful beings. He placed us in a world full of beauty, pleasure, and wonder. Because of sin, we overlook the Giver of these gifts and make them ultimate in our pursuits, pouring our energies and resources into acquiring more. The throne of our hearts is abdicated to the relentless chase of lesser things. We worship not the good and awesome God Who’s been so kind and merciful to us but instead relinquish our souls to “gods” made of human hands and idols that ultimately disappoint, degrade, and drain the life from our souls. For God to command us to make Him first and only in our lives is an absolute act of perfect love. He made us, He knows us, and if we’ll worship Him and Him alone as our God, He’ll pour the true, rich blessings of a heavenly Father over His beloved children. He’s worthy of our allegiance, our worship, and our love. May we faithfully live with our Lord as our first and only – in accordance with His command.

Lord God, we worship You as the one true living God Who rescued the Israelites thousands of years ago and Who rescues us from sin even today. We praise You as the God of mercy, provision, and protection. We ask Your forgiveness of our thoughtless, foolish efforts to satisfy our thirsty souls with anything other than You – Living Water. Thank You for Your faithfulness to us even when we turn away from You. Thank You for such a great and perfect love as Yours that would draw our wayward hearts back to the safety and security of Your arms. Spirit of God, we need You. We need Your help to rid ourselves of false gods in our lives. Help us to recognize them, renounce them, and run to the Father Who forgives and restores. In the beautiful Name of Jesus, amen.
