One rash decision is all it takes to begin a cascade of tragic consequences not only for yourself but for others as well. In the book of Esther, we meet King Xerxes, who’s thrown a massive party for his nobles, officials, and the men of the city. All have indulged in liberal alcohol consumption, and at that time, King Xerxes summons his beautiful queen to parade in front of the multitude of drunken friends and citizens. In wisdom, Queen Vashti refuses his nonsensical order. Refusing to be shamed in front of his guests, King Xerxes immediately  removes her from her throne and his presence forever. As the months pass, King Xerxes misses his queen, but an order is an order and can’t be rescinded. His personal attendants suggest a sweep of the kingdom to bring in beautiful virgins from across the land, creating a selective pool from which King Xerxes will choose a new queen. Thus begins a tragic process of ruining the lives of countless young women due to a king’s foolish, rash decision. The women are forcibly removed from their homes and families and brought to the palace to become part of the king’s harem. The sole purpose of each woman is to serve the king sexually. Once she’s been with the king, she’s moved to a part of the palace reserved for his concubines. She’ll remain there for the rest of her life unless the king specifically summons her by name. She has no opportunity to reunite with her family and no hope of marriage. She’ll live out her days sequestered behind the palace walls. Most of the decisions we make in haste or in the heat of emotion don’t ruin the lives of others, but they can have painful consequences. Words we speak can’t be taken back. Our example for Christ suffers, and loved ones are wounded. Actions we take or don’t take speak of the selfishness of our hearts. Pray on a regular basis that the Holy Spirit will temper your emotions when you’re tempted to react quickly and to say or do things you can’t unsay or undo. Pray for the wisdom to pause, ponder, and respond in grace. Pray for the humility to sincerely apologize to those you’ve harmed and to back up your apology with change. Jesus forgives those lapses when we respond to situations foolishly, but there’s help by the power of the Holy Spirit to not respond foolishly in the first place. Call on that power and wisdom to help you.

*****

Lord God, You are the God Who acts in all times, in all places, in all situations out of infinite wisdom and patience. Your every action is measured, right, and good. We confess before You that at times, we are short-tempered, impetuous, and careless. We wound others, hurt ourselves, and represent poorly our roles as Your chosen ambassadors. We are desperately in need of Your Holy Spirit’s calm, peaceful, gentle influence. Thank You for the gift of repentance. Thank You for the counsel and presence of Your Spirit. Lord, we desire that we never bring harm to others by our own rash actions and words. Holy Spirit, put a guard over our mouths and raise a red flag when we consider actions without considering consequences. Stop us in our tracks, and prevent us from bringing shame to Your Name and hurt to people You love. Fill us with genuine humility and a fervent desire to make amends for our wrongs. Change us, and give us the heart of Jesus to love and serve others. We pray in His beautiful Name. Amen.
