The two-chapter book of Haggai is found tucked into the pages near the end of the Old Testament. While it’s a small book, it carries significant encouragement as well as admonishment for God’s people – for those living in the time of Haggai and for us as well. “The word of the Lord” comes to the prophet Haggai at the perfect time. The first wave of exiles has returned from Babylon. The Israelites are finally home. Having resettled in Judah, they’re gathering in Jerusalem to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles for the first time in over 70 years. The ruins of the Temple lie in view of all. Older people who remember the former glory of Solomon’s Temple mourn its disrepair. Younger ones look on the Temple with excitement for the days ahead when the Temple will be restored. Haggai takes advantage of the assembling of God’s people and addresses the crowd. He foretells the future glory of the Temple – when the footsteps of the Messiah will grace the Temple courts. But for the present, he tells the people, “Work.” The time to rebuild is now. God sees and knows the challenges His people will face, and He assures them through Haggai that He will be with them. He tells them to be strong and to be confident in the power of His Spirit to help them in the Temple’s reconstruction. We may not be rebuilding God’s Temple, but He still sees and knows our challenges, great and small. He beckons us to come to Him for the help we need. Opportunities to grow and prepare for the work He has for us are provided as we spend time in prayer, studying His Word, worship, and community. Then He sends us. It’s time to put our hands wholeheartedly to the tasks the Lord has called us to – “good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10) Take courage and be confident. God’s Holy Spirit empowers and accompanies us in every situation and wherever He sends us. There’s work to do, and He’s made us ready.

Lord, Your plans are perfect and Your will is good. You equip Your people to carry out Your blueprints for all of history. You encourage us when we’re weak and admonish us in our complacency. Thank You for the privilege of not just working for You but of also working with You. You partner with us, carrying the heaviness of our load and making our burdens light. Remind us in our weariness that we have a Helper Who stands ready to hold us up and support us. May we be faithful ambassadors who serve You with zeal and joy, for You are worthy of our finest and best efforts. In the beautiful Name of Jesus, amen.
