Reading long lists of odd-sounding names in the Bible can admittedly be boring, but everything in Scripture is included by God’s design. Ezra 2 lists the names of the people in the second wave of exiles who returned to Jerusalem from Babylon to begin spiritual reformation in the land of Judah. The leaders among the exiles were from the tribes of Benjamin and Judah. Those who would serve in worship and performance of the priestly duties were from the tribe of Levi. Each man among this group could authenticate his lineage all the way back to Abraham. This was the remnant God promised to use to perpetuate His plans and purposes on earth for the good of His people. No matter his assigned task, each man was fully committed to serving God wholeheartedly and with great reverence. What an honor to be recognized in the pages of God’s Word! The next time you run across another long list of names in your Bible, resist the urge to skip over it. Give each name the respect it deserves, and challenge yourself to have the mindset and the heart behind the name. As these men did, live fully devoted to the Lord and committed to faithfully carrying out your role in His eternal plan.

Father, our ways are not Your ways. Your wisdom and reasoning are beyond our understanding. We are in awe that somehow You have determined to use us for the accomplishment of Your will here on earth. We are weak and prone to wander, but You have set Your eyes on us. You have filled us with Your Spirit so that Your power enables us to live for our good and for Your glory. How grateful we are to be called Your children – to have Your love lavished on us, to walk in paths of blessing, and to serve our King with glad and sincere hearts! Lord, we are humbled to be Your ambassadors, but we are filled with joy to be called members of Your family by Your mercy and grace! Help us to live honorable lives that reflect Your holy character. We love You and pray in Jesus’ beautiful Name, amen.
