When the Amalekites attacked the Israelites (a battle described in Exodus 17), Moses instructed Joshua to assemble a band of men to fight against them. Then Moses went to the top of the hill with the staff of God in his hands. Aaron and Hur accompanied him. As long as Moses held up his hands, God gave the Israelites the upper hand. But when he lowered his hands, the Amalekites had the advantage. So Aaron and Hur had Moses sit on a rock. Each man stood at Moses’ side, holding up his hands and keeping them steady until sunset – and a secure victory for Israel. True commitment to a friend will cost us – time, energy, endurance, and more. Do you have that kind of friend? Are you that kind of friend? One who is willing to step in and sacrifice when a friend is in need? God designed us to do life together. When your world is heavy and dark, I pray that your “Aaron and Hur” arrive quickly to support and care for you. And I pray that you’ll have a willingness to be the “Aaron and Hur” your friends may need in tough times of their own.

Father, You are our strength. When we struggle with the difficulties of life, we can confidently count on You to provide the courage and stamina to prevail over our circumstances. Often You provide for us through the willing, sacrificial service of our brothers and sisters in Christ. While we tend to pridefully lean on our own abilities and rely solely on ourselves, You have given us the rich provision of Your family to support and encourage us. Thank You, Father. And thank You for the privilege of being used as a means of grace in their lives when their own dark seasons threaten to take them down. Help us to sacrifice our comforts and conveniences in service and love for our precious brothers and sisters.  We pray in Jesus’ beautiful Name, amen.
