Pocket Thoughts - 6/20/26
Exodus 21 is the first chapter in the Bible after God gives the Ten Commandments to His people via Moses. It’s the first of several chapters that contain laws fleshing out for the Israelites how to live as a distinct, holy nation among pagan cultures. Delivered from slavery in Egypt, God is giving them a new identity – no longer as slaves but now as freed people. He’s educating them on how to live out the responsibilities that come with that newfound freedom. The detailed laws in Exodus 21 deal with specific situations that will help the leadership to render wise judgments. The laws express His heart for the protection and provision of the vulnerable as well as the high value He places on all human life. They also contain the simple principle that all actions have consequences. In our current cultural moment, we’ll never experience the exact scenarios described in Exodus 21, but as believers living as “aliens and strangers” here on earth, we have the privilege and duty to represent God’s character to the world. Our hearts must love and embrace justice – as His does. We must exercise care for the weak and unprotected – as He does. And we must cherish and actively guard the dignity of every life at every stage – as He does. We must also live intentionally, understanding that our every thought, word, and deed impact our witness for the God Who has delivered us from our “Egypt” of sin and death. Our goal is not to fit in with the world but to demonstrate what a life radically transformed by the Lord should look like. Well supplied by His Holy Spirit, we can give to others what God has given to us – a commitment to their good, grace, fairness, value, and love. We have all we need to follow faithfully in His footsteps as we live out our freedom and invite others to join us.

Father God, You are the Defender of the powerless, the Author of life, and the Holy God over all. You rescue the enslaved, save the lost, and empower the helpless. Forgive us – Your people – when we fail to embrace our roles as Your faithful ambassadors. Forgive us when we represent to the world anything less than Who You truly are. Forgive us for not stepping up to preserve life, for not pursuing righteousness in our communities and in our own lives, and for our cowardice in not advocating for the vulnerable. Lord, this is not Your heart, and we ask for Your mercy. Thank You for grace. Thank You for Your Word that instructs us in how to live as a holy people set apart for Your purposes. Help us, Lord, to stay mission true to carrying out Your will among the nations, among our neighbors, and among our families. We are humbled by the high calling with which we are called in Christ Jesus. We pray in His beautiful Name, amen.
