Reestablishment of Temple worship after the exile came with a sobering warning. Haggai the prophet reminded God’s people why they had endured the discipline of the exile in the first place – they had replaced God as their highest love and priority with self-indulgence and idolatrous rebellion. Haggai warned the Israelites that worship at the Temple would be empty and meaningless if they refused to put God first and pursue lives of holiness. They had been experiencing lack and disappointing return for their work in the fields. But their first steps of obedience resulted in God’s opening of the floodgates of His blessing. Half-hearted commitment to the Lord and a shallow acknowledgment of His presence in your life will leave you, like the Israelites, lacking and disappointed. Come to Him with a sincere, humble heart, and ask Him to fill you with a passionate devotion to Him. Ask Him for the faith and power of His Holy Spirit to walk in obedience. The full, true measure of His blessing is the overwhelming assurance that He’s with you and He’s guiding you through every step of your life. Will you by faith present Him with your whole heart? He’s eagerly waiting to pour His goodness into your life!

Father, when my soul feels dry and my spirits are low, will You remind me to check my commitment to You? Not always, but often enough, I find that I’m neglecting some aspect of my relationship with You. Prompt me to course-correct so that I can once again walk in the light of Your favor and drink from the fountain of Your joy. Lord, You’re where my heart is at home. Tether me to that holy abode with golden threads of love and grace. Thank You, Jesus, for making the way for me to know and be known by, love and be loved by, delight in and be delighted in by my Good Father. In Your beautiful Name, amen.
