Pocket Thoughts - 8/21/26
God is faithful to His promises, and the four craftsmen in the prophet Zechariah’s vision at the end of Zechariah 1 are just one more proof of that. Four horns appear in Zechariah’s vision. The angel of the Lord explains that these horns are the world powers that have scattered Judah and Israel. Then the prophet is shown four craftsmen whose purpose is to terrify and defeat “the nations who lifted up their horns against the land of Judah to scatter its people.” In multiple places in Scripture, God had promised to come against those who brought harm and oppression to His people and who opposed His purposes. Now God is about to make good on His promise – again. All nations and powers are ultimately tools in the Lord’s hands to accomplish His sovereign plans. Nations and leaders will rise and fall. Conflicts and wars will come and go. Good and evil will face off on stages large and small. And the Lord uses all of it as time marches toward the Day when He returns and establishes His good, just, perfect reign. Although we may not see that Day in our lifetimes, we can be comforted in knowing that we’ll eventually take our places in the kingdom of our Promise-Keeping God.

Father, the headlines can be scary. The news can bring fear and anxiety. The future can feel daunting as local and world events seem to spiral out of control. Holy Spirit, in those moments when we can so easily capitulate our thoughts to the work of the enemy, draw our hearts and minds back to truth and hope found in Your Word. Remind us of the rich, beautiful future You have in store for those who love you. Prompt us to share that good news with those who can’t seem to break free from the hold of hopelessness and despair. Help us to offer the Bread of Life to the starving, the Light of the World to those living in darkness, and Living Water to those parched for even a drop of truth. Lord, the Day is coming! May we be found faithfully trusting in You and living out Your love until we’re carried Home to be with You forever. In Jesus’ beautiful Name, amen.
